Model S: Rather than rolling out new features by model year, Tesla makes its running changes ap-
style—i.e., whenever it develops an update. In March it began adding extra titanium and aluminum underbody armor to deter the rare sorts of battery punctures that resulted in two much-publicized fires. Next year should see upgraded seats, a bigger battery-pack option, and a four-wheel-drive model launched concurrently with the Model X.
Model X: The seven-seat crossover, which we first saw as a concept in early 2012, has now been delayed until mid-2015. A two-motor four-wheel-drive system will be standard, and the “Falcon Wing” doors will make it into production, though even notoriously bullish CEO Elon Musk admitted that the doors posed design challenges. Like the Model S on which it is based, the X will be offered with a 60- or 85-kWh battery pack. Tesla is claiming a sub-five-second zero-to-60-mph time for the quickest (P85) version.
