Cars of the Future Will Run on Water or Poop: Your Choice

At the 2014 Los Angeles International Auto Show (LAIAS), Honda displayed their Clarity Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) Concept car that runs on hydro-electric fuel-cell power.

This car will be ready for purchase in 2016.

Honda was just one of several automakers who are making the move to emission-free driving focused on fuel-cells and all electric transport.

Toyota revealed the Mirai , a sedan that runs on hydrogen fuel-cells that will be available to customers in December of 2014.

Mirai “uses no gasoline and emits nothing but water vapor”, travels 300 miles on a tank powered by hydrogen gas which is converted to electricity and refuels in 5 minutes.

The attraction of fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs) is that they “produce zero tailpipe emissions. On a life-cycle basis, FCVs running on hydrogen derived from steam-reforming natural gas—currently the most affordable way of making hydrogen—produce less than half the greenhouse gas emissions of a gasoline-powered car.”

To speed up the process for manufacturer’s incentive to build more FCVs, “Department of Energy launched the $1 million H2 Refuel H-Prize competition (H2R) to challenge engineers and entrepreneurs to develop affordable systems for small-scale hydrogen fueling to help bring hydrogen vehicle infrastructure into the mainstream.”

The H2R is a “two-year competition” to entice “America’s engineers and entrepreneurs to develop affordable systems for small-scale hydrogen fueling.”

In California, the FuelCell Energy Inc. (FCE) has developed the first “tri-generation” plant that converts sewage into electrical power for industrial facilities; as well as renewable hydrogen for transportation vehicles.

FCE derives their energy source from the Orange County Sanitation municipal wastewater treatment plant – in other words, the waste from Californians is powering this treatment facility and would be useful in powering FCVs.

In the UK the Bath Bus Company (BBC) has created the first public transport vehicle that is powered by “human sewage and food waste”.

Called the Bio-Bus, this vehicle seats 40 passengers and can run 186 miles on a full tank of … poop.

The Bio-Bus derives its fuel from a sewage treatment plant and only needs “the annual waste of about 5 people” to power this bus.

Back in 2009, the capital city of Oslo in Norway began using biomethane from human waste to power public transport buses to “cut fuel costs and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by both the treatment plants and the buses.”

Ole Jakob Johansen, project manager, told the press : “Using biomethane makes sense. Not only would the biomethane otherwise be wasted, but the reduction in emissions per bus will go a long way to achieving our carbon-neutral target.”

Behold the Thunderbolt, an Aston Martin Vanquish Customized by Henrik Fisker

At the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance (which is sort of an East Coast riposte to California’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance), designer Henrik Fisker and California tuning company Galpin Auto Sports unveiled the Thunderbolt, a custom based on the Aston Martin Vanquish.

Fisker and Galpin have teamed up before, to create the 725-hp Rocket, which was based on the Ford Mustang and revealed at the L.A. show last fall. In creating the Thunderbolt, Fisker—who, as the one-time design director of Aston Martin, should well know his way around its cars—laid on new, carbon-fiber bodywork.

Compared with the Vanquish, the Thunderbolt is sculpted with more creases, and it features a wraparound rear window and a glass roof. The Thunderbolt squats on a lowered suspension and rolls on 21-inch wheels. The customized interior is turned out in Natuzzi leather and incorporates an 11.6-inch Panasonic curved control screen and a Maurice Lacroix Skeleton dash clock. A built-in holder fashioned from leather cradles two wine bottles, so the Thunderbolt driver can bring the party.

Although it is based on a V-12–powered Vanquish, the Thunderbolt is not an Aston Martin project. Its makers point out that “the prototype unveiled at Amelia Island is a design study only.” Will it be built? “There will be no commercialization of the prototype shown at Amelia,” comes the answer.

FERRARI 400 SUPERAMERICA SHORT-WHEELBASE CABRIOLET HEADLINES SALE

RM Sotheby's is returning to Amelia Island for their annual sale, marking the first sale since Sotheby's took an ownership interest in RM Auctions. Last year's auction brought just under $36 million in sales, with an impressive 97 percent sell-through rate that moved 91 classic cars in the single-day sale held at the Ritz-Carlton hotel. The top sale ended up being a1937 Delahaye 135 Competition Court Torpedo Roadster that brought $6.6 million on auction day, hailing from the Malcom Pray collection that saw a significant paring-down that year. That result actually set a single-car record for all auctions held in conjunction with the annual concours event. The second highest sale in 2014 was a 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster that brought $2.42 million, reflecting a hike in interest for the model. That BMW also came from the Malcolm Pray collection, which was resposible for a lion's share of the top ten results.

The lineup heading into this weekend has no shortage of cars from well-known collections, with RM Sotheby's once again valuing quality over quantity when it comes to the number of lots.

Here are six cars to watch this weekend.

The last variant of the Testarossa, the Ferrari F512 M has always been tough to spot at auctions as collectors are still "aging" them, but the upcoming Amelia Island sale will offer an example from 1995. Powered by a 4,943 cc flat 12-cylinder engine with Bosch Motronic fuel injection producing 440 hp, this F512 M is one of just 75 cars that were completed for the U.S. market, and it is also an examle of the marque's last flat-twelve engine.

This particular Ferrari shows a claimed 11,000 miles from new, and is said to be well-preserved. It had a timing belt service just 150 miles ago, in 2012, if you're concerned about such things, though we have trouble seeing this car racking up thousands of miles immediately after it changes hands this weekend. RM Sotheby's estimates this example to bring between $325,000 and $375,000 on auction day.

One of the stars of the auction will undoubtedly be this 1955 Jaguar D-Type. An example of one of the most beloved Le Mans cars, this is one of fifty four produced for privateer racers in the mid-1950s, and is powered by a 3,781cc DOHC inline six-cylinder producing 300 hp. Finished in British Racing Green, this car was originally sold to a customer in Helsinki, Finland. A car that enjoyed a long racing history in Finland, this example was disassembled in the 1960s and was eventually put back together from two cars that bore its components. Now restored, RM Sotheby's estimates this example to bring between $3,750,000 and $4,250,000, as it is believed to be one of the most original examples of the D-Type remaining.

A rare model that does not come to market often, the BMW 302 Cabriolet by Baur is powered by a 3,168 cc alloy V8 engine producing 120 hp. A sedan that was first introduced by BMW in 1951, the 502 was built in coupe and cabriolet form by Baur starting in 1956. Just 57 examples of the two-door cabrio were made, and this example is stated to be one of two known to be in the U.S. RM Sotheby's estimates this example to bring between $250,000 and $350,000.

One of the most-watched pre-war cars at the weekend sale will likely be this 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500/540 K Cabriolet A by Sindelfingen. One of just 33 Mercedes-Benz 500 K Cabriolet A examples built, this model was first shown at the Berlin Motor Show in 1934, Powered by 5,410 cc inline-eight, the Cabriolet combined a long wheelbase with a rakish, elegant headline. Brought to the U.S. in 1961, this example was eventually restored and has been successfully campaigned in the Colorado Grand. Believed to be one of just 11 in existence, this Mercedes-Benz is estimated to bring between $2.9 million and $3.5 million.

BMW will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its first U.S. race win at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance on March 14 and 15. The BMW 328 in particular will be honored in a special class ...

 Porsche 911 Speedsters from 1989 have been climbing in value, and we have seen a number of examples trade hands in recent months at the Scottsdale auctions and other venues. RM Sotheby's will offer a wide-body turbo-look example with optional sport seats that displays a claimed 6,417 miles from new at Amelia Island this weekend. This example is finished in Guards Red over tan leather and was originally supplied to California. One of 823 U.S.-specification Speedsters made for 1989, this 911 is estimated to bring between $200,000 and $250,000 on auction day. Air-cooled 911 values have been surging lately, and collectors will be keeping their eyes on just about every example prior to the 993 generation cars -- although 933-generation cars are making moves of their own.

Heading into the sale, the all eyes will be on this 1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet by Pinin Farina, estimated to bring between $6 million and $7 million. Powered by a 3,967cc V12 engine with three Weber 46 DCF carburetors producing 340 hp, this Ferrari is one of just seven short-wheelbase Superamericas produced. When it comes to this model, the 400 Superamerica SWB cabriolets have been valued by collectors above other models, and this example with chassis number 1945 SA is finished in a rare Verde Bottiglia over a Rosso Connolly leather interior.

Captur, Kadjar and one other: growing Renault crossover range to get a seven-seat flagship rivalling Nissan’s X-Trail

Renault is on the crossover offensive. Following the unveiling of the brand’s new Nissan Qashqai rival, the Kadjar, bosses have announced that an even larger seven-seater designed to take on the X-Trail is currently under development.

Expected to appear in 2017, the new Renault will also have to fend off the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Skoda’s forthcoming SUV for sales. At Geneva Motor Show 2015, we learned further details of how Renault's family-sized SUV will take shape.

• Best SUVs on sale now

Designed to sit above the Kadjar in the range, the forthcoming D-segment crossover will retain familiar Renault styling cues, design boss Laurens van den Acker told us: “It’s much more than just a big Kadjar – the proportions are slightly different, the positioning is more high end. We are going for a different type of customer. It will sit just underneath the Espace, which for me remains the flagship of the brand.” Our exclusive images show how the newcomer could look.

And he allayed fears that the new model will take sales away from the Espace, which is also a seven-seater. “Not many markets will take the D-crossover [the big SUV] and the Espace. The D crossover is mainly for Asia, where it will replace the Koleos, and there is no Espace in Asia. It will be sportier, it will be younger than the Espace.”

Meanwhile, senior vice president, marketing, Michael Van Der Sande said the new car will probably continue the naming strategy established on the Captur and Kadjar. “There is a fairly high chance the name wiil start with a C or a K,” he said.

• Best crossovers on the market

As with the Kadjar, when it comes to developing the new crossover, Renault will take advantage of its alliance with Nissan. The recently introduced X-Trail is not only expected to be a main rival, but it’ll also provide a large portion of the newcomer’s mechanical underpinnings. 

The CMF platform produced by the Renault-Nissan alliance already underpins a range of crossover models such as the Qashqai, Kadjar and X-Trail, and is expected to serve as a basis for Renault’s seven-seater, too. That means the 130bhp 1.6-litre diesel offered in the X-Trail would fit nicely into place. As with its Japanese cousin, the seven-seat configuration is expected to be a cost option. 

• Hot new 4x4s coming soon

Although the likely 2017 launch for the crossover is some time away, Renault has several new models in the pipeline that’ll keep it busy in the meantime. A hotter version of the quirky rear-engined Twingo city car is expected soon, along with a pick-up truck and a replacement for the Laguna saloon that will rival the Ford Mondeo and VW Passat.
